5 Keys to Composing an Impactful Resume
5 Keys to Composing an Impactful Resume5 Keys to Composing an Impactful ResumeTry this exercise with a friend or loved oneGive the other person your resume, but limit their reading time to six seconds and instruct them to show you how much they were able to assimilate in that limited time. See 10 Items to Banish From Your Resume. Why six seconds? Because thats the amount of eyeball time your resume typically receives when its being first reviewed by human resources staffers or hiring authorities. If you cant convey something that grabs their attention, chances are strong they wont hesitate to hit the delete button and end your chances of being considered, no matter how well-qualified you might be.This fact should influence the decisions you make about the overall look and feel of your resume. How you organize your information, what you choose to include, your choice of words and graphic elements all should contribute to a clear and coherent message that can be grasped in six seconds. Even a simple line across the page can facilitate a readers understanding or detract from it, depending on how it is used. Here are some things you should strive for when creating your resume.Readability. Make certain that even at a distance, your page looks inviting to read and that it is easy to follow the various sections, such as Skills, Professional Experience, Education, etc. Using color to highlight the section titles can make a difference in this regard. Is there enough white space on the page to avoid looking like a solid blob of ink? See 10 Things Your Mom Didnt Teach You About Job Searching.Audience accessibility. It is likely that within your target company, a variety of types of people with diverse backgrounds and roles will be reading your resume. For example, HR, financial and technical professionals all may weigh in on a resumes value. It is important that the document speak to each of them in ways that they can appreciate and value. Especially if you are in a field with its own parteicular vocabulary that is unknown to non-specialists, make sure you do your best to explain things in a way that can be commonly understood. When you list obscure tools or techniques that you are accustomed to using, take pains to also convey what results or accomplishments you attained by using them.Present your personal brand. It might be that your resume surfaces because it came up in a sourcers search as possessing the right keywords. Congratulations But now, as they begin to read it, a succinct and well-crafted branding statement at the top can truly set your document apart from others using the same keywords. In the top few lines, just under your name and contact information, it is essential that you give a helicopter view of yourself, conveying your essential qualities, areas of expertise a nd specific content that only you can offer the employer. Keep it to no more than four or five lines, topsSee Tips for Surviving a Career Transition.Get rid of ambiguities. A resume recently reviewed by your author had this line Devised solutions that produced the desired results. Lines like this convey no real information and leave questions about the candidates ability to communicate clearly. When asked, What were the problems requiring solutions? What kind of solutions did you develop? What were the desired results and how were they achieved? the response was Ill get into that when I have an interview. Sadly, ambiguous statements like these are counterproductive to getting the desired interview, and are likely to sink ones chances of getting to the point of explaining their exceptional skills and talents.Avoid stock phrases and cliches. Why you should always ask the hiring manager this one question
Why you should always ask the hiring manager this one questionWhy you should always ask the hiring manager this one questionOf the many questions candidates can ask potential employers, What would a typical day look like? ranks among the most revealing. Heres why all job seekers should pose it during interviews. It provides a clearer pictureAsking the hiring manager the question, What does a typical day look like?helps you understand the daily expectations and routine for the role, says job search strategist Sarah Johnston, founder of theBriefcase Coach. It helps you assess the quality and quantity of the workload.Similarly, hiring managers often talk in generalities. For example, communicating directly with clients might actually translate into answering a constantly ringing phone, not working one-on-one to develop new marketing strategies like you hoped. Job satisfaction rests heavily on the actual tasks performed day in and day out, soform a realistic idea from the start of what the position involves.Johnston recounts an instance when such knowledge would have been useful. I recently welches talking to a job seeker who changed jobs. She welches originally in a role that was very administrative. She wanted more interaction with people and hoped to move into a sales role. She interviewed for a sales position and got the job. Unfortunately, she did not have a good understanding of what the job entailed before she accepted it.Even though the title was sales coordinator, the position was still very administrative. It can uncover red flagsGot an interviewer whose response leaves you confused?Consider the inability to provide a sufficient answer apotential red flag. While some roles dont easily lend themselves to a consistent platzdeckchen of tasks, too much uncertainty often proves frustrating for a new hire and may signal that management hasnt really thought enough about expectations for this position. It offers a glimpse of company cultureAs the interviewer talks abo ut an average day, listen for clues about thegeneral work environment. Does the team seem to spend a great deal of time in meetings? Are breaks and lunch mentioned? Which people seem to come up most often as ones with whom youll interact (leaders, vendors, remote workers, staff from other departments, etc.)? Answers to these types of questions willhelp you develop a vibe about work style, relationships, and work-life balance. Its a good springboard to further conversationFinally, remember that hiring managers like thoughtful inquisitiveness.Asking questions during the interviewconveys interest in the companyand a desire to ensure the match is a good one for both sides. While What would a typical day look like? is not the most original question, its a solid standard that demonstrates eagerness to learn more. The interviewers answer likely will spark other potential questions, leading to a genuine back-and-forth that makes a memorable impressionThis article was originally published on FlexJobs.

3 things James Comey can teach you about leaving a job gracefully
3 things James Comey can teach you about leaving a job gracefully3 things James Comey can teach you about leaving a job gracefullyThis week, fired FBI director James Comey was in the spotlight for a very public defenestration from his job. As if the firing itself wasnt excruciating enough, details showed Comey had been dumped unceremoniously, finding out only because the newsplayed on the televisionsbehind him before hed been officially notified. Ouch.Yet today, Comey issued a farewell letter to his colleagues following his departure, and from a career advice standpoint, its one of the best.Even though Comeys leaving a high-profile job, there are several key takeaways everyone can see from how hes handled the situation that are important for any person in the workforce, especially if youre leaving a job or company under tough circumstances.1. Never Burn a BridgeBehind the scenes, Comey could be cursing up a storm, chugging scotch by the bottle or sobbing the corner. Reports suggest he s chilling out in his garden in Northern Virginia. In public, however, Comey has been stoic and straightforward, and his public note to his colleagues is kind and courteous. To be clear We have no idea how hes actually feeling, and thats a good thing. What can you learn? When you leave, keep your true feelings to yourself - the time when they can make difference has passed by the time youre out the door - and never burn a bridge if you dont have to. Whatever Comey does next, he may have to work with former FBI agents or administration members, so theres no point in alienating them. Venting publicly about the situation youre dealing with might feel like a therapeutic exercise at the time, but its much like Pandoras box You cant take things back once you let them out. Spilling your guts to a parent or partner is one thing airing your dirty laundry to colleagues is a whole other thing, not to mention a big no-no. Theres a limit to empathy Even close colleagues can be wounded by hurtful things you say about your former employer if they have no choice but to stay.2. Make It About the Good TimesOne of the biggest elephants in the room when it comes to Comeys firing is, understandably, his relationship with boss. Instead of delving into that or focusing on the negatives, however, Comey spent most of his short note thanking his colleagues for their time together and praising them for their efforts. Even on his way out, he showed the team why he was a good leader because he was thinking of their contributions.Think of it this way The final thoughts James Comeys colleagues will have of him as a boss is him saying that working with them has been one of the great joys of my life instead of him being angry.Call it recency bias. Were influenced by what we saw last. When youre leaving a job, your behavior during those final few days or moments will be remembered just as much as the actual work you did.Thats why its important to be courteous, take extra time to thank those who helped you and as your mother probably told you, if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all. Professionalism is a personal characteristic your responsibility to be professional doesnt end just because your work contract does.3. Keep It ShortTheres no doubt that if Comey wanted to, he could have written a 30-page goodbye letter and every news outlet wouldve covered it in great detail. Instead, Comey kept his sentiments short n sweet as he walked out the door.Even if you dont write a goodbye letter when youre leaving your job, make your exit as quick and graceful as possible. Theres no reason to throw yourself a week-long goodbye party as if you deserve a state funeral, or have everyone wave at the door as you leave the building. Make sure youve filed any last-minute projects and updated colleagues who are taking over your work. Then, walk out without fanfare and move on. People will know how to contact you.A lot can be said - and has been written - about Comey and his time at the helm of the FBI. Yet, regardless of all the controversy, when it comes to his goodbye letter and his actual exit, he did everything right.

Cartoonist and comic Jason Chatfield on using self-doubt in your career
Cartoonist and comic Jason Chatfield on using self-doubt in yur careerCartoonist and comic Jason Chatfield on using self-doubt in your careerAbout a week ago, after having the violent realization that Ive been doing everything wrong, I came across a blog written by a guy named Jason Chatfield. As it turns out, Chatfield, comedian/vice president of The National Cartoonists Society/cartoonist for The New Yorker and Mad Magazine, is a productivity machine that knows the failure epiphany I welches currently experiencing, in the biblical sense.Raised by a single mom, in a small duplex in the suburbs of Perth, in Western Australia, he learned very early that the only effective tactic against self-loathing is consistent output. There is any number of books you could read to try and convince yourself that youre worth it and worthy of your success etc. but ultimately its you that has to attach your name and worth to your work and find a way to get comfortable with it, Chatfield told Ladders.F ollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe blog that inspired our interview revolved around the importance of assigning deadlines. When you leave tasks in the care of a to-do list, you tell yourself that these tasks should get done but not that they need to.To encourage accountability, Chatfield works from a calendar. Every assignment receives a target date, once it gets completed, he notes the amount of time it took him to do so, so he can better estimate windows of completion for similar errands in the future.Sage advice, though, in truth, the medium post that animated our chat ended up being the jumping-off-point for an honest discussion about working through unrelenting self-hatred. We eventually returned to the importance of deadlines, but the scenic route yielded a lot of valuable (and relevant) insights.Phantoms of expectationGrowing up, Chatfields free time was divided evenly b etween making people laugh and sketching cartoons in his room. I wondered if the luck of landing a job that pays him to do both came with any sort of comparable pressures.I think a lot of creative people who earn their living doing what they love have to deal with a combination of impostor syndrome, fear of where their next paycheck is coming from and fear that they will wake up tomorrow and their ideas will have all dried up, Chatfield told Ladders. The fear of being found out exists across all industries, though the conventional tricks never seem all that considered the bulk of them are just dense-wordy riffs on the little engine that could.Believe in yourself, is a vaguepiece of advice that only really applies to a small minority. I think its more comforting to know that fruchtwein of us are right about our incompetence. Ultimately, anxieties will always stand between us and a finished project. It doesnt really matter if theyre based in truth or come from within, we have to learn to work in spite of them. Chatfield believes his ability to silence the beckon of self-sabotage, was authored by his mother, as he watched her navigate self-employment against the odds in reservierung to provide for him and his sister in their tiny duplex.I witnessed some first-grade freelance hustle. My mom now has a successful, thriving business 25 years later and remains my model for work ethic. I started my freelance business at a drawing board in my tiny bedroom of that same duplex 15 years ago, Chatfield recalled. You can make good work if you hate yourself very muchBut managing to live a productive life with full-blown masochism isnt just about suppressing it you also have to learn how to weaponize it. The self-prodding that keeps many professionals from getting a good nights sleep energizes Chatfield to prioritize daily tasks. When looking at a list of things that need to get done, he asks himself Whats the one thing you need to do today that will let you go to bed tonight wi thout staring at the ceiling, stressing that you need to do it? Those things get done first. Chatfield then applies, the measured strategies featured in his monthly blog, its never answering every email in your inbox before getting started. Working from a calendar also kills procrastination because it not only tells you what you have to be doing now but tells you exactly what youre going to be doing next.Jason ChatfieldPitching is a consistent feature of Chatfields day. Without knowing it, he echoed one of the things Ive always found the most difficult about it How do I get this idea across without my colleagues finding out that Im a loser-idiot? Chatfield expounds,Pitching should be a death-row alternative for murderers. Every Tuesday at 11 AM, I go in person to the World Trade Center and pitch 10 drawn-up ideas to the Cartoon Editor of the New Yorker and inevitably get maybe one in ten put through to the Editor in chief. The odds of getting a cartoon in the New Yorker are crazy. L ast year I pitched 387 ideas and they bought 12 (thats pretty good for the New Yorker.)Warding off phantoms of expectation requires an appetite for honest and sometimes dispiriting feedback. Chatfield takes the commentary of his colleagues in stride, irrespective of its nature. The desire to make good work, has to be greater than the fear of disapproval.I have a daily comic strip that goes out 7 days a week to 34 countries, translated into different languages. Over 12 years Ive figured out what the editors and readers do and dont like, through the slow process of feedback and development. So I have a comic strip editor in my head, said Chatfield.Playing to your audienceThis similarly applies to his process as a stand-up comedian, where his editors are his audiences. As a comic, you know something isnt working if people arent laughing its a fairly basic feedback process. This was particularly relevant to me because of how often I assign undeserved credence to the tiny defeats that ar e necessary to actualizing lofty ambitions. Chatfield believes many of us confuse, self-hatred and arrogance. When I relayed to him, my awful method of pitching ideas, the majority of which leave my mouth as rambly-incoherent-nonsense infected-jargon-from-an-Asylum-escapee,he suggested I try pitching ideas, under the assumption, there was no way anything I said had the ability to convince anyone of anything they didnt already know or think. This way, our ideas come out more honest, and with less wordy baggage.Chatfield was introduced to this ideology, via an accomplished writer, Elizabeth Gilbert and her bookBig Magic Creative Living Beyond Fear. The best advice I could give as a key to anything, is to approach it knowing that nobody owes you anything. You may well have worked hard at something, but the world really owes you nothing in return. Doors wont magically open for you and work wont miraculously get done for you. You have to be ready to make the most of every opportunity as i f itll be your last, Chatfield summed up at the end of the conversation.Be sure to check out Chatfields meditations, in all of their incarnations. And if you get a chance to see him live at a comedy club in New York City I highly recommend you do.
